First Victorian Minister for the Arts

In August 1972 Rupert Hamer became Victoria's first Minister for the Arts (as well as Premier and Treasurer!). He established the Ministry for the Arts, now Arts Victoria, the first body of its kind in the country, providing a dedicated and formal mechanism for supporting and fostering the arts across the State. Hamer served as Arts Minister until 1979 (Premier until 1981), handing over the reins to Norman Lacy.
