1976

Castlemaine State Festival established

The first Castlemaine State Festival was held in 1976, making it the longest-running major Victorian arts festival, predating the Melbourne Festival by a decade. The inaugural festival opened with a concert by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

The festival was founded by Polish-born, Melbourne businessman and arts patron, Berek Segan AM OBE. The biennial festival continues to present a wide array of arts in the unique places and spaces of this picturesque goldfields town – from mines and quarries to historic churches and public gardens. The 2013 festival runs from 15-24 March.
